Our friend of 14.5 years, a 3/4 Rhodesian Ridgeback & 1/4 German Pointer, named Marley, had to be put down. The kids and family are low down in a bad way. He was a good hound that lived a good life. Hug your pooch tonight for Marley. Listen to your favorite Brokedown Palace, he was a one of a kind mutt.

He sure looks like he was a sweetie!

It's so difficult losing a pet!

So sorry for your loss!

You have my sympathies. I'm still grieving over a cat that died last summer. Marley was really beautiful. It's so hard to lose them.

really sorry to hear that Brian - never, ever an easy thing to do. my heart goes out to your and your family. feel blessed with the time you were able to spend with him.

The Rainbow Bridge

inspired by a Norse legend

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,

Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.

Where the friends of man and woman do run,

When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,

Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.

On this golden land, they wait and they play,

Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,

For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.

Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,

Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,

Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.

All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,

Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;

Together again, both person and pet.

So they run to each other, these friends from long past,

The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,

Has turned into joy once more in each heart.

They embrace with a love that will last forever,

And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

Dire that is a wonderful poem. Thanks for sending it. I'll print it out so the kids and Mrs. Wine can read it too.

you are welcome my friend

my vet sent it to me with a bereavement card when i had to put my Smokey down a couple of years ago. as sappy as some people may think it may be, it really did help me some during my loss. hope your family can find a touch of peace within it.

We put our cat down 8 years ago. It was so hard to do. We haven't had a pet since. We've been contemplating a new fuzzball. The kids would love one.

Sorry to hear about your dog. It's a tough thing to do. We had to put our 14.5 year old Akita/Shepherd, Nikki down last Friday. Listening to 4/19/82 for all of us as I type.

A tiny tribute to Nikki:

Hey All,

Today we had to put an end to Nikki's suffering. She was a sweet dog and you could not have asked for a better pet to be around a new born baby or a toddler. Not a mean bone in her. Coleen could stick her hand in her bowl while Nikki was eating, and she would just back up and let Coleen play. Coleen's first chore was to feed Nikki every night, and was meticulous about filling the measuring cup, carrying it over to her bowl and not spilling a bit of food. Many of you who came to our house over the nearly fifteen years we had Nikki, were greeted with enthusiasm... OK... barking and jumping, but when she calmed down, was happy to have company and sad when you left. She had a hard time after being mauled by a pit bull and adjusting to the move to New York, but she still kept the house free of mice and Jehovah's Witnesses. Even today she thought she could catch a bunny, and unearthed a mole. She couldn't catch it, but her nose still worked great.

We spent most of the afternoon in the yard on a sunny spring day. Her last day was a good day.

CP

Sounds like Nikki had a good long life too. Before we said goodbye we all sat around and told our favorite Marley stories. I'm sure you have lots of fond memories as well. I wish you and your family well.

There is a He's Gone, where Bob Weir says in the beginning, "This one's for Marley", refering to Bob Marley. Does anyone remember which date that is?
I would assume sometime shortly after the death of Bob Marley of course.

Thanks ShortHopper, I had forgotten about that He's Gone dedication. That show is a good one and I'm sure I'll play it more than a few times in the next week or two.

I appreciate everyone's support.

I don't have to love them when they piss me off by bolting out of the house and embarassing me in front of the neighbors though do I?

OK - you can revise above to animal lover. I'm not a cat person BUT I have known some cool cats and as the "owner" of a lab I can certainly appreciate the difference in disposition between boundless enthusiasm and aloof detachment.

My sympathies Wineland, it's tough to lose a pet that's been with you a long time. We had two cats (aged 15 and 19) that died on 27 December and 2 January last Winter - it leaves a gap.
